U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W), has been established at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro, with the financial support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Pakistan under the Cooperative Agreement signed with USAID on Dec.12, 2014 for five years. The Center is dedicatedly training and building up the capacity of a new generation of engineers and water professionals in order to solve the water security challenges of the twenty-first century.

The University of Utah, USA is providing technical assistance to MUET for advancing the development and growth of USPCAS-W and also in strengthening the Center’s professional and institutional capacities. The tangible deliverables of the Center include postgraduate degree programs, applied policy research, facilitation of public-private partnerships, and provision of policy advice in a range of water-related disciplines. The main purpose of the applied research component is to deliver relevant and innovative research to meet the needs of industry, civil society and government.

Vision & Mission

To establish a world class education and research center dedicated to solving water related problems of Pakistan and to develop strong and productive liaison with local and international organizations aiming to support Pakistan’s economic development.

To train present and future faculty, young scientists, engineers, managers and other stakeholders with state of the art techniques and cutting edge knowledge in the water sector. Through collaboration with academia, government and industry we will pursue applied research solutions to water sector problems and bring about policy reforms aiming to strengthen economy of Pakistan.

Center's Research

USPCASW advances water research capacity and impact in Pakistan with a sustainable, externally funded, high-­impact applied research program that bridges expertise among USPCASW and other participants. Overall, the emphasis of USPCASW efforts is on stimulating an innovative applied research program that is multidisciplinary in nature and developed within the broader context of the water-­development nexus to support science‐engineering‐policy interface in Pakistan’s water sector.

Graduating with top honors in Bachelor's laid my foundation, but it was at USPCAS-W where I truly flourished. USPCAS-W isn't just an institution - it's a hub of innovation and collaboration, preparing us to tackle Pakistan's water challenges head-on.

Huge thanks to Dr. Ghulam Hussain Dars for lighting the way in my research journey and a special shoutout to Dr. Kamran Ansari and Dr.Arjumand Zaidi for their incredible support and sweet demeanor - their kindness made all the difference! Beyond academics, MUET became my second home. From late-night study sessions to bonding with batchmates over endless cups of chai, the hostel life was more than just accommodation - it was a nurturing community of friends and mentors who shaped my path.

From Lab Bench to Manchar Lake: How USPCAS-W Shaped My Life’s Purpose in Water Security

When I joined the Water, Sanitation & Health Sciences program at USPCAS-W, Mehran UET Jamshoro, I came with a vague idea of wanting to “do something” about water in Pakistan. Two years and a thesis later, I left with a quiet certainty that this is the work I want to give my life to. From ruined biochar isotherms in the Advanced Water Quality Lab to sampling Manchar Lake in 45°C heat, every failure and every field trip made the 53,000-children statistic we kept reading in class feel less like a number and more like a quiet obligation.

Huge thanks to Dr. Muhammad Rizwan, who taught me to fail productively and re-check the equilibrium concentration before knocking on his door, and to Dr. Naveed Ahmed Qambrani, who reminded us every single week that the lab is not the field, and the field is not the lab. USPCAS-W wasn’t just a degree — it was the place where I learned what kind of professional I want to become.

From Soil to Water: A Journey of Growth at USPCAS-W

Joining USPCAS-W, MUET for my second Master's this time in Integrated Water Resources Management, after completing my first in Soil Science stands as one of the finest decisions of my academic journey. The unwavering guidance and mentorship of Dr. Arjumand Zaidi, Dr. Asmatullah, Dr. Kazi Suleman Memon, and Dr. Kamran Ansari, paired with world-class laboratories and a truly research-driven environment, shaped both my academic and professional growth in ways I could not have imagined. USPCAS-W taught me to see water not merely as a resource, but as the very foundation of a sustainable future. It is more than an institute, it is a center of excellence that nurtures innovation, leadership, and a deep sense of community.

Beyond academics, MUET became a second home to me. My role as a Research Assistant in the Soil and Water Analysis Laboratory allowed me to bridge theory with practice, laying the foundation for my professional expertise and future ambitions in the water sector.

Shaping My Professional Journey: My Time at USPCAS-W, Mehran UET

My tenure at the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water, USPCAS-W, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, has been instrumental to my professional growth. While my undergraduate education established my academic foundation, USPCAS-W provided the advanced knowledge, research exposure, and interdisciplinary collaboration essential for addressing Pakistan’s critical environmental challenges. My research topic was “Green Synthesis of Bimetallic Derived Moringa Oleifera Nanoparticles and their Microbial Application”. which is one of the most advance research topics in the field of materials and Synthesis. Center acts as hub of innovation, applied research, and creation of specialized environmental engineering knowledge.

A special thanks to Dr. Syeda Sara Hassan for her devoted research supervision and to Dr. Kamran Ansari and Dr. Tanveer Ahmed Gadhi for their unwavering mentorship and guidance during my academic career. Apart from the academic discipline, Mehran UET provided an environment that was conducive to personal development, networking, and team spirit. My experience at USPCAS-W has given me technical skills and vision to make a significant impact in the area of environmental engineering.
