USPCAS-W Students Endeavor Research on Water Characteristics of Hyderabad City, Manchar and Keenjhar Lakes
Students of Master of Science (MS) in Environment Engineering Department at U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro delivered their projects’ presentations, on which they have to carry out research in this year. Students in their presentation said that their research studies will set the guidelines for the government and other agencies to intervene for the improvement of water characteristics as to benefit the society. MS Student Ms. Saira Halepoto has to research on the “Evaluation of Water Drinking Quality of Hyderabad City”, in which she will evaluate the physico-chemical and biological characteristics of the water provided in Hyderabad City. She said that access to safe drinking water for the inhabitants of Hyderabad City is still challenge due to inadequate and insufficient water supply infrastructure, which cause the serious impacts on the health of the people of the city.
She told that her study will serve the SDG goal for “Clean Water for All” if the recommended suggestion will be incorporated by the Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Hyderabad. Ms. Hiba Muzammil has to research on “Socio Economic and Health Impact Assessment of Environmental Degradation of Manchar Lake”, she while delivering presentation by identifying the problem said that Manchar Lake is contaminated because of salinity, agricultural, and domestic waste and the contamination of lake has the adverse effects on the lives and livelihood of the people of the region. She said the outcome of her study will help to identify the impact level of water degradation effect on socio-economic and health of the people of the lake’s vicinity.
Mr. Hafeez Khoharo will do research on the Assessment of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Manchar Lake. Mr. Khoharo has identified his research problem that Manchar Lake was considered pollution free lake in past but currently it has been polluted by many other sources like Main Nara Valley (MNV) drain, agricultural and domestic waste. He suggested the examination of POPs through research study is very much necessary to determine and quantify the level of contamination of water in the lake and its surroundings. Ms. Sadaf Sher while delivering her research proposal on, “Evaluating the Capacity of Keenjhar Lake to Meet Future Demand of Karachi City”, said that study will help to enhance the capacity and scope of the lake to provide water to Karachi- metropolis city of Pakistan. Other MS Students of USPCASW Mr. Azizullah has to research on “Assessment of Heavy Metals Contamination in Water and Sediments of Drinking Water Treatment Plant MUET Jamshoro”, Farhan Wahid has to perform an Evaluation of Drinking Water Interventions in Chachro Tehsil, District Tharparkar and Kalemullah Shaikh has to study on the “Dispersion Modeling of Emissions from Thermal Power Station Jamshoro and Human Health Risk Assessment. Prof. Dr. Ghous Bux Khaskhelli. Dean Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering MUET , Dr. Najma Memon of National Center of Excellence and Analytical Chemistry, University of Sindh Jamshoro, Dr. Bakhshal Khan Lashari, Project Director USPCAS-W, Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Prof. Dr. M. Munir Babar, Dr. Kamran Ansari, Dr. Rafique Chandio, Prof. Dr. Abdul Khalique Ansari, Dr. Uzma Imran, Mr. Awias Anwar Chandio, Dr. Asmatullah and other faculty members of MUET and relevant departments participated in question answers sessions of the students seminar.
