USPCAS-W signs MoU with Seven Distilleries for treatment of effluent
U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro has signed Memorandum of Undertaking (MoU) with seven distilleries in various areas of Sindh. Project Director USPCAS-W Prof. Dr. Bakhshal Khan Lashari and Resident Director, Matol (Pvt) Ltd. Engr. Dost Muhammad Baloch signed the MoU papers at the Center. As per MoU, USPCAS-W will undertake a detailed study for development of prototype for the treatment of spent wash produced by Matol (Pvt) Ltd., Unicol Limited, Habib Distillery, Al Abbas, Shahmurad, Dewan and Pak Ethanol Distilleries. According to focal person of the project Prof. Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, the Center will provide services to the seven distilleries for a period of six months in which faculty member Dr. Naveed Qambrani will lead the project as principal investigator. The task of the team will be to identify and quantify toxic substances in the raw spent wash, to improve the current condition of anaerobic digestion in distilleries, to suggest suitable and cost effective treatment for the anaerobically digested spent wash to enable it to become compliant to the National Environmental Quality Standards, he told. The project will cost an amount of three million for completion of the project.
