USPCAS-W Celebrates Earth Day

The Earth Day was celebrated by U.S. – Pakistan Centers for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W), Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET) Jamshoro. On this occasion, the tree plantation and badminton tournament were organized at USPCAS-W new building and MUET Gymnasium respectively.

Prof. Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Deputy Director USPCAS-W, Engr. Saleem Ahmed Memon, Director Sports MUET, and Prof. Dr. Kamran Ansari inaugurated the event.  In prize distribution ceremony, Engr. Memon said that such type of sports activities is encouraged in MUET to keep the students, faculty, and staff healthy and innovative. Apart from the academic and research, USPCAS-W is very much active in organizing sports activities since last year.

In the ceremony, Dr. Mahar said that actually the earth day is used to be celebrated on April 22 on every year, but the Center had planned to celebrate it extensively by including tree plantation and sports activities. Due to environment degradation in the society, the every day should be celebrated as earth day by contributing to the green environment, Dr. Mahar added.

Dr. Mahar further said these type of extra-curricular activities afresh the mind of the participants to think innovative and work enthusiastically for the research oriented activities. Total 4 pools were formed consisting of 32 teams participated in the badminton tournament. Mr. M. Shahid Panhwar, M&E Specialist and Mr. Muhammad Wajid Ijaz, PhD Student of Environmental Engineering of USPCAS-W won the final match by defeating the MS Students Mr. Imdad Ali Nizamani and Ms. Iram Sifat. Both of the teams were awarded respective winner and runner-up shields along with cash prizes.

The chief guest, event organizers and MUET officials of the sports were given appreciation shield. Mr. Muhammad Ali Nizamani, the event focal person and volunteer students Ms. Qandeel Khan Environmental Engineering and Mr. Tahir Ali Shaikh of IWRM were also presented special shields for organizing the event. On this occasion, students, faculty, and staff of USPCAS-W participated in the tree plantation campaign in the new building where different environment-friendly trees were planted and also participated in the badminton tournament held at MUET Gymnasium.
