Stakeholder Consultation Workshop and Training on Indus River Conservation
The US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCASW) at MUET, Jamshoro, successfully organized a Stakeholders Consultation Workshop and Training aimed at conserving the Indus River’s precious water through innovative wastewater treatment and reuse methods. This workshop was part of the HEC-funded project, “Conserving Indus River Water Quality through Pollution Source Tracking, Economical Treatment Systems, and Water Circular Economy (HEC-COE-37).”
Prof. Dr. Kamran Ansari, Director of USPCASW, warmly welcomed the participants and presided over the meeting. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the Indus River’s critical challenges. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to protect this vital resource, which serves as the lifeblood of Sindh.
Dr. Tanveer Ahmed Gadhi, Assistant Professor at USPCASW, delivered an insightful presentation on the current state of the Indus River’s water quality and introduced natural wastewater treatment and reuse methods. He underscored the importance of sustainable practices that leverage natural processes, such as ecosystems, plants, and microbes, to purify water. His session highlighted the potential of these methods to address water scarcity and reduce environmental impact.
The workshop also featured a session by Mr. Asad Rajput, who discussed the basic designs and feasibility of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. Participants gained hands-on experience while visiting the Kotri industry and observing a functional constructed wetland system.
The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including Engr. Imran Khan (WASA Hyderabad), Khalid Usman Shar (Agricultural Department), Syed Ahmed Shah (Irrigation Department), Ibtasam Khan (EHS Manager, Kotri Industry), Ali Khan (Assistant Manager, Meko Demin Mills Kotri), Suresh Kumar Oad, Aijaz Ahmed Hingoro, Dr. Ameer Hussam (PCRWR Tandojam), Rafi-O-Zaman Brohi (Sindh EPA), Dr. Muhammad Ali (Assistant Professor), Dr. Muhammad Farooque Lanjwani (Research Associate), and Engr. Bilal Bashir (Research Assistant) from USPCASW MUET.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step forward in safeguarding the Indus River and promoting sustainable water management practices for future generations.
