Two-Day Training Workshop on Climate Change Projections Concludes at USPCAS-W MUET
The Two-Day Training Workshop on Climate Change Projections and Its Impact on Water System Performance concluded on Friday at the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) at the Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET) Jamshoro. At the certificate distribution ceremony, Prof. Dr. Bakhshal Khan Lashari, Project Director of USPCAS-W said that apart from harnessing the technical skills of the participants, this workshop also serves as a strong platform for an effective network of experienced people. He said that USPCAS-W has been established with the generous support of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under the cooperative agreement at MUET and technically supported by University of Utah (UU), USA.
He said that the Center has been equipped with modern water laboratories to conduct applied research in the water sector in Pakistan. He said that issues related to the climate, environment, and water of the country will be solved by developing human capital in the sector, which will bring prosperity to the people by boosting Pakistan’s economy. Dr. Lashari said that USPCAS-W at MUET, with the support of USAID and UU, is producing water leaders for the country.
Dr. Jeffery Layton Ullman, the Technical Advisor to USPCAS-W, said that the University of Utah is dedicated to providing technical support to the Center to impart quality education and modern applied research for Pakistan’s water sector. He said that such workshops will enhance the capacity of the stakeholders of the Center, who will ultimately contribute to the development of Pakistan. On Thursday, the first day of the seminar, Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Deputy Director of Academics and Research at USPCAS-W, gave an introductory overview of the Center by sharing a detailed presentation that highlighted its aims and objectives.
USPCAS-W faculty Mr. Ghulam Hussain Dars and Mr. Waqas Ahmed, developers of the workshop,explained the aims and objectives of the workshop. They said that the workshop aimed to advance the capacity of engineers, scientists, and water managers related to climate change impacts on system performance. They said that the workshop paved the way to build participants’ training strength in the area of climate impact studies by using different tools such as R statistical language and WEAP decision support tool. Ms. Rakhshinda Bano, a key resource personnel for the workshop, emphasized the expected outcomes of the workshop were the improved participant comprehension of climate projections, vulnerability assessments and a range of application techniques.
On this occasion, the certificates given the participants and facilitators of the workshop were distributed by the management of the Center. Participants from different organizations in Pakistan included PMD/Research Center, PCRWR, LUMS Lahore, SUPARCO, BUITMS, NED University, Karakoram International University, PMAS Arid Agricultural University, SIDA, WAPDA, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, QUEST Nawabshah, and MUET SZAB Campus Khairpur.
