2nd Focused Group Meeting under the USPCAS-W Funded Research Project “Eco-Innovation in Textile Processing”
The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (US-PCASW), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro organized 2nd focused group meeting (FGD) on 3rd May 2019 at Karachi, in collaboration with Korangi Association Trade and Industry (KATI). The meeting was part of the activity of the funded research project titled: ‘‘Eco-Innovation in Textile Processing at KITE Sector’, led by Dr. Zubair Ahmed, Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar and team member Dr. Tanveer Ahmed. Experts and partners from textile industries and a representative from WWF, Pakistan, were invited for a briefing on the funded project and to discuss critical problems associated with water/ wastewater management in their respective industries. Dr. Tanveer Ahmedled the discussion and briefed the participants about ongoing progress made at 3 textile industries related to improvement in water efficient use, wastewater treatment and further life cycle assessment of textile processing in pre and post-assessment scenario. Some of the key problems faced by the industries were highlighted i.e. temperature in influent water, caustic recovery in the denim industry, the impurity of the raw chemicals supplied locally and the presence of heavy metals in the source water. Moreover, different approaches were also discussed to solve the highlighted problems.
